U.S. Civics: Dear President Obama (Grade 3-6)

Description:

Ask your child to write a letter to President Obama that includes goals that they would like to see the administration achieve, and good wishes to the president and his family.

Learning Objectives:

  • Use correct grammar and spelling
  • Learn the meaning of the word inauguration

Materials needed:

  • Computer with internet access
  • Researching media sources about the new president, (child may need your help with this part)
  • Writing paper
  • Pen or pencil
  • Envelope

Activities:

Show your child a picture of President Obama and ask his name. Explain that on January 20, 2009, Barack Obama will begin his term as 44th president of the United States of America.

Explain the word inauguration. Help your child find research online sources for photos and general information about the president and his inauguration. Ask your child to tell you the most interesting things that he found out about President Obama.

Talk about the meaning of the word inauguration. Ask your child to write a list of goals that they would like to see President Obama accomplish during his presidency.

Variations:

  • For primary children you should work with your child to write the letter.
  • For elementary children, assist your child in starting their letters. Perhaps offer the introductory paragraph, or part of an opening sentence that children finish on their own
  • For older children: discuss the differences in a friendly letter and a business letter. Ask which form they should use in a letter to the president. Have them write their letters.
  • Show your child how to address an envelope.
  • Have older children check the Write to the White House section of the White House for Kids web site for instructions on how to write to the president of the United States.
